Toyota’s Electric Pickup Concept Looks Like A Future Tacoma

The concept electric pickup sure looks like its ready for production

LISTEN 02:03

Toyota and Lexus recently unveiled a whole bunch of electric vehicles (EVs), and it basically covers every single niche and market. You can say that Toyota is pretty much late on the EV game, but they’re now trying to catch up in a big way. One of those EVs is this unnamed electric pickup concept that was also previewed during the press event.

Based on its design, the electric pickup does not look too radical. In fact, it nearly looks ready for production. This new electric pickup gets a lot of its design cues from the recently-unveiled Tundra full-size pickup, such as the octagonal grille (albeit closed off), vertical air vents mounted below the LED headlights, and a bit of underbody protection.

This unnamed electric pickup concept is giving us strong Tacoma vibes, and this probably serves as a preview of Toyota’s future midsize pickup

The headlights itself are somewhat inspired from the Tundra, too, while the black contrasting roof gives this pickup a sporty design. Another clue that this pickup is nearly ready for production is its wing mirrors. Whereas half of the concepts that were shown have radically thin wing mirrors, this electric pickup’s mirrors look conventional.

At the sides of the pickup, the Tacoma influences are quite apparent. The greenhouse and flared fenders are reminiscent of those of the TRD Pro variant. Toyota however, did not provide any photos of its rear end, so this is about as much guesswork that we can do for now. We won’t be surprised if it looks similar to the Tundra though.

Toyota was coy on details of its electric pickup, and though nothing is confirmed, we do think that this prototype might serve as a preview for the upcoming Tacoma. Being a body-on-frame pickup, we expect the future Tacoma to ride on the TNGA-K platform, which supports electrification. This is also the same platform that underpins the Tundra, Lexus LX, and Land Cruiser.

We’re definitely hoping that when Toyota’s future electric pickup or even the Tacoma comes out, it will look nearly identical to this macho-looking concept.
