The 2023 Honda Civic Type R’s Nurburgring Ambitions Exposed

It seems to be the same prototype which Honda teased, but it can be seen in action this time

LISTEN 03:26

Honda gave us a glimpse of the upcoming Civic Type-R a few days back. The company released two images of the hot hatch that were wrapped in camouflage, but gave us a fairly good idea about its styling cues. But, to us enthusiasts, two images aren’t enough. So, here are some more shots of the Civic Type-R taken by our photographers. The only fly in the ointment is that this car has got red skin as well. Nevertheless, we get to see it in action this time and with fewer clothes than the first time it was spied.

Not As Bold As Before, But Still Sharp

The Civic Type-R you see here is wrapped up in a red camouflage that has little Type-R car prints all over it. Up front, the Civic Type-R isn’t loud by any means. However, it looks quite sporty, thanks to the large air dam at the bottom with honeycomb mesh detailing within. We can be sure that there will be no bling and chrome except for the badges. Side air intakes are covered on this prototype, but it will add to the aggressive styling of the car. It also features LED headlights and DRLs.

The four-door Civic Type-R is a hatch but has more of a fastback styling. The prototype that was spotted wore the same 10-spoke black wheels shod in low-profile tires that we saw in the official teaser images. Red Brembo brake calipers can also be seen. Rocker trims with winglets are present in front of the rear wheels. This is there on the current model as well.

The three-tip exhaust graces the center of the derriere. The one in the middle is larger than the other two. Of course, there’s a diffuser as well

The huge wing at the rear is still the attention-seeker, but there could be a few differences make to the bottom half. It is wrapped in camo, but the side vents here seem to be subdued when compared to the current Type-R. We’ll have to wait and watch how different this bit is without the skin. Apart from this, there’s the three-tip exhaust setup with the center one being larger than the other two.

What Powers The 2023 Honda Civic Type-R?

It’s not even been a week since Honda teased the upcoming Civic Type-R, but the car is already spied out in the wild during testing

The new Honda Civic Type-R will be powered by the same 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged mill, but with higher power outputs.

The 2021 Civic Type-R puts out 306 horses at 6,500 rpm and 295 pound-feet of torque between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. The new model could have more than 300 pound-feet of torque and perhaps 330 horsepower.

Handling dynamics could be improved by a stiffer chassis and a different suspension tune-up.

Don’t expect any changes in the drive layout and the transmission. The engine will continue to power the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. A dual-clutch automatic could be offered as optional. As is with the present model, a limited-slip differential and rev-matching will also be offered as standard.

Honda has said that the upcoming Civic Type-R will be launched in 2022. A slight price hike over the 2021 model’s starting price of $37,895 can be expected, but it will stay under the $40,000 mark in all likelihood.
