Can the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk defeat the Lambo Urus on the drag strip?

LISTEN 01:52

SUVs used to be all about utility back in the day, but now they’re also available in high-performance trims. The Lamborghini Urus is one of finest examples out there, but companies like Mercedes-Benz and BMW build their own beefed-up haulers. When it comes to American oomph, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is just as exciting. But could it outgun the mighty Urus on the drag strip? Hennessey Performance also wanted to find out and staged a two-round race between them.

Hennessey Performance provides tuning packages for loads of cars and SUVs and it recently acquired an Urus and a Trackhawk to update their internals. The American firm decided to race them together before they go into the workshop, so we can finally see which SUV is quicker.

When it comes to power, the Jeep seems to have an advantage, as its supercharged, 6.2-liter V-8 Hellcat engine comes with 707 horsepower.

The Urus’ twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V-8, on the other hand, packs 641 horses. Torque-wise, the Jeep benefits from 645 pound-feet, while the Lambo puts 627 pound-feet on the pavement.

With an extra 66 horses and 18 pound-feet at its disposal, the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk should be quicker, right?

Well, no! Although it takes the lead at take off during the first round, it eventually loses the race. The second leg starts off with the SUVs neck and neck, but the Urus wins again.

But even though the Lambo is the winner here, the Trackhawk holds its own very well. That’s something to be proud off against an Italian SUV that was pretty much developed as a supercar.
