Chevy’s Mustang fighter gets a few nips and tucks

Chevy’s resident muscle car and Mustang fighter went under the scalpel for the 2019 model to bring it up to speed in the looks and technology department. As part of this mid-cycle update, Chevy also added in the 1LE package for the Camaro Turbo to make it more track ready while updating various components of other trim levels to help keep them fresh while still standing out in the crowd. There are no power updates as part of this update, but with the new tech and new looks, the Camaro should be able to hold its own against the Mustang and the Challenger for a few more years.

Update 05/03/2019: Chevy has decided to update the 2020 Camaro SS with cues borrowed from the Camaro Shock Concept that was showcased at the 2018 SEMA show due to the overwhelmingly positive feedback. Check out the updates in our review below!

The Chevy Camaro Z28 Would Have Been a Brutal, Monster of a Car

The Camaro just isn’t as hot as it used to be, and it’s a shame because GM was cooking up something huge for the Z28 badge

When we saw the teaser of what looked like a Camaro-based Ford Mach-E competitor, we came right out and said it was time for the Chevy Camaro to die. In fact, that exact statement was based on the fact that Chevy can’t even justify the Camaro’s existence anymore. In late 2020, a new report said that Chevy was considering killing off the Camaro post-2023 when we would get a new-gen model, which was followed by news that the current model would run until 2026, making the current model some 10 years old when it will be retired. We don’t have any updates about that, but we’ve learned that previous rumors of the Camaro Z28’s cancellation are likely true, and a new report says it would have been a brutal beast.

The Best Chevy Camaros of All Time

The Best Chevy Camaros of All Time

The muscle car nameplate has a long history of rolling out memorable models

Very few cars in the history of the American car industry are as famous as the Chevrolet Camaro. The Ford Mustang can give the Camaro a run for its money, and so too can models like the Dodge Challenger and the Camaro’s own cousin, the Chevrolet Corvette. As iconic as those models are, the Camaro is no less important. It’s one of the first American-made performance cars to capture the hearts and pockets of Americans, and while the Camaro did have an almost decade-long sabbatical in the 2000s, the nameplate still stands as one of the most famous nameplates, not just in the U.S., but all over the world. The Camaro has been around since 1966, and in that time, Chevrolet has rolled out more than its share of memorable Camaro models. Here are the 10 best Camaros of all time, at least as far as we’re concerned.

This Rendering of a Modern Chevy Camaro IROC-Z Is More Evidence That GM Could Do Better

This Rendering of a Modern Chevy Camaro IROC-Z Is More Evidence That GM Could Do Better

Chevrolet should revive the Camaro IROC-Z, but we may have to wait for a new Z28 first

The sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro has been on the market for five years as of 2020, yet GM developed only a handful of special-edition models. On top of the SS, there’s only the ZL1, as the Z28 nameplate was seemingly abandoned.

Ford, on the other hand, developed more than 10 variations of the sixth-gen Mustang, including revivals of the iconic GT350, GT500, Bullitt, and Mach 1. Chevrolet could definitely do better with a new-generation Z28, but, as this new rendering shows, a modern IROC-Z model is also a good option.

Chevy Plans to Shelve the Camaro In The Next Couple of Years

At this point, you’ve probably heard the rumors that – despite the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger’s success – the Chevy Camaro is on the verge of being discontinued. We reported on this as early back as June 2019 when it was said that Chevy just couldn’t justify the Camaro’s existence. If anything we assumed that the name would live on, especially have GM broke the internet (in a bad way) by teasing a jacked-up electric car that looked painfully like the current-gen Camaro. Now a new report, one that quotes “multiple sources within GM,” says that the Camaro is on the verge of death, so what now?

This Mid-Engine Chevy Camaro Looks Good, But Won’t Happen

You can ask all you want, Chevrolet isn’t going to build it

Ever since the C8 Corvette got out of the bag, people have been wondering whether the Camaro is next in line for a layout revamp and whether GM and Chevrolet are going to give it the mid-engine treatment as well.

While we do not believe that is going to happen anytime soon, if ever, there are some concept artists out there that have had a go at picturing a mid-engine Camaro. One of the first renders we’ve seen looked a lot like a Lamborghini Huracan. This one, however, takes a lot more after the C8 Corvette.

Rendering: If the Chevy Camaro Was Mid-Engined, It Would Look Very Lamborghini-ish

No, Chevrolet is not building a mid-engined Camaro because it would make no sense whatsoever

2019’s most notable event in the car world must be, without too many doubts, the debut of the mid-engined 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8. Chevrolet has been brewing one for such a long that that it must have come as a relief for everyone involved in the project.

But what if Chevy tricked down the mid-engine blueprints to the Camaro? Would it enrage its fan base or will it send everyone jumping for joy? Well, that’s hard to anticipate although such a move could definitely split the camps. But design-wise, a mid-engined Camaro could end up looking like a Lamborghini Huracan, if we are to take for good a rendering that’s been shared on the internet over the past days.

Now, it looks like GM is going to ruin the Camaro if what we’re seeing in this latest image turns out to be legitimate. With the Camaro set to be discontinued by 2023, it looks like GM might use the same body style, albeit on a raised, electric platform to combat the Ford Mach-E. Please, say it isn’t so.

The Top Muscle Cars of the 60s and 70s

The Top Muscle Cars of the 60s and 70s

The early 60s all the way up to the 70s was a golden age for the American automotive industry if only for the simple fact that muscle cars were growing not just in number, but in overall stature. The muscle car arms race of the that time yielded plenty of options for customers looking for more power and metal-twisting torque from these vehicles. And the models only grew in popularity as more and more people began clamoring for the biggest, baddest, and most powerful machines.

The general appeal these muscle cars offered to the growing American car culture of the time was the opportunity to own powerful cars that could be used for drag racing while also keeping costs at bay. At that time, a number of brands began developing their own models, including legendary names like the Ford Mustang, the Chevrolet Camaro, the Plymouth Barracuda, the Pontiac Trans-Am, and the Dodge Charger, to name a few.

While the golden age of American muscle was limited to parts of these two decades, the industry has enjoyed a renaissance of sorts in recent years. It’s not going to compare to the 60s or the 70s, but as proven by customer clamoring, the culture of American muscle cars is far from bearing its last legs.

To pay tribute to the time where muscle was king of the road - and the drag strip - we have compiled a list of the 10 most memorable muscle cars of the golden age.

Video of a Ford Mustang GT and Chevy Camaro Drag Racing Shows Just How Bad Ford Drivers Are

Sometimes, you’re better off leaving the tech to the people who actually know how to use it, right?

The Chevrolet Camaro and the Ford Mustang. These two muscle cars are as intrinsically linked to one another as Magic Johnson is to Larry Bird. You can’t go a day mentioning one and not mentioning the other, and you can’t have a drag race with one and not expect the other to be lining up next to it. And so, just as predictable as it is to watch the sun rise in the morning and set in the evening, Fifth Gear decided to indulge themselves in a little drag race involving the Mustang and, you guessed it, the Camaro.

The optics of the race are straightforward: who will take the crown in a straight-line speed race? It’s a question the video will answer emphatically, but as you’ll see, the biggest takeaway wasn’t the results of the race, but on what Fifth Gear host Tiff Needell did to the Mustang. Check out the video and find out.

Wallpaper of the Day: 2019 Chevy Camaro ZL1 1LE

With forced-fed LT4 from the Corvette Z06, crazy aerodynamics, and a price tag of around $60,000, the Camaro ZL1 1LE is one of the best track day cars on the market in terms of performance and bang for your buck. Thanks to a number of weight-saving measures – including a fixed-back rear seat and thinner glass – the 1LE is actually around 60 pounds lighter than the standard model. It’s said to be capable of hitting 60 mph in around 3.4 seconds and a quarter mile in around 11.3 seconds. For 2019, you can even have it with GM’s new 10-speed automatic which should make that quarter-mile time, and it’s time around the track just a little bit faster. Anyway, we thought the ZL1 1LE deserved a little bit of love, so we decided to make it our wallpaper of the day. Check out our favorite below or run through the gallery to pick your own favorite.

The Average Age of Muscle Car Buyers Is Over 50 - What It Means for the Challenger, Mustang, and Camaro?

There are a number of factors that contribute to this surprising revelation

You would think that people who buy muscle cars these days are young buyers who are looking to make a name for themselves with affordable performance cars that they can proudly show off on their social media pages. You’d be wrong. The median age for buyers of, say, Dodge Challengers is 51 years old. 51 years old. That age hardly counts in the millennial age bracket, but that’s not even the most surprising part pertaining muscle car buyers these days. What’s most surprising is the median Challenger buyer is the youngest in the muscle car segment, specifically among the three established American ponies. Is this a trend worth paying attention to, and if so, how does this revelation contribute to the future of the muscle car segment?

The 2020 Chevy C8 Corvette is a New Life Line for the Chevy Camaro - Here Are 5 Reasons Why

The Camaro may not go the way of the dodo just yet

It’s safe to say that Chevrolet accomplished what it initially set out to do with the all-new Chevrolet Corvette C8. The move to make the next-generation Corvette a mid-engine performance car has so far been met with positive reviews. The reactions are still fluid and will remain fluid for at least a few more years, but as far as the initial salvo’s concerned, the Bowtie nailed this one out of the park. Unfortunately, this is no time for celebration for Chevy because it has another important decision on its hands regarding the fate of its other iconic performance nameplate: the Camaro muscle car. Unless you’ve been consumed with anything and everything about the Corvette C8, there are rumors that Chevy is killing the Camaro yet again. Development for a seventh-generation Camaro started, but the automaker decided to cancel the program and stretch this generation’s life a few more years until it fades off into the sunset. It would be a very undignified way for the Camaro to go, but what if — of all things — the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 comes in and saves the Camaro from getting its head chopped off. It’d make for a great story, sure, but there are legitimate reasons — we thought of five of them — why it could happen, too.

Is Chevy’s resident muscle car about to meet its maker...again?

The Chevrolet Camaro has been a staple in the American muscle car scene since it returned in 2009 from a seven-year absence in the first decade of the century. But just as it came back with a vengeance earlier this decade, the Camaro could once again go away, quiet as a mouse, in 2023 when the current sixth-generation model ends its run. General Motors has refused to comment on the Camaro’s fate beyond this generation, but a report from Muscle Cars and Trucks alleges that the iconic nameplate will once again be shelved in light of the model’s recent struggles to generate the kind of sales traction that justifies its existence. Is the General’s warhorse about to be put to pasture again? Only time will tell, but the next few years will likely determine whether the muscle car lives to see another generation or closes the chapter on what has become a rough couple of years.

2018 - 2019 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE

2018 - 2019 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE

Could the most track-capable ZL1 to date replace the Z/28?

Unveiled for the 2017 model year, the sixth-generation Camaro ZL1 is by far the most impressive Camaro with forced-induction built to date. Powered by the the same LT4 engine introduced with the Corvette Z06, the latest ZL1 packs 650 horsepower, looks incredibly menacing, and costs a little more than $60,000, an amazing sticker given the performance. But, as incredible as it may sound, Chevrolet just managed to the make ZL1 even better by giving it the 1LE upgrade.

Previously available on the SS model, the 1LE package was made available for the V-6 version too for the sixth-generation Camaro. Now, Chevy devised a similar package for the ZL1 and claims that the supercharged 1LE is the most track-capable Camaro ever, meaning it should outgun the bonkers (and now discontinued) Z/28 too. These claims are backed by racing-based suspension and aero technologies, as well as exclusive Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, and a range of weight-saving measure. How powerful and fast is it? How much it cost? How does it compare to the Shelby GT350 and the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat? Read my review below to get all the answers.

Update 01/29/2019: Chevy has updated the Camaro ZL1 1LE for 2019. Check out the drivetrain section below for the full scoop.

Car For Sale: 1993 Callaway C8 Camaro Six-speed with Only 1,135 Miles on the Clock

This 1993 Camaro Z28 is the development prototype for what would be the Callaway Camaro C8

Callaway is a long-time tuner of GM products although it focuses on Chevy cars, trucks and SUVs. The fourth-generation Camaro didn’t escape the clutches of Callaway, though, and this car is the prototype that toured all major auto shows in the mid-’90s and was on the cover of Motor Trend in 1994. It boasts a 404 horsepower, 6.3-liter, V-8.

The F-Body Camaro that debuted in 1992 was seen by Reeves Callaway’s company as a "lower cost platform than the Corvette with a larger market." As such, the American tuner and manufacturer debuted their own high-performance version in 1993. The ’SuperNatural Camaro’ kit was available with a variety of options in terms of both the body and performance-enhancing parts. The Camaros sent new from Chevy to Callaway built to the top specification right at their shop were known as C8s. Callaway also offered the ’SuperNatural’ kit for the C4 Corvette and, in the same vein, the Corvette delivered brand-new to Callaway and equipped with these mods are known as Callaway Corvette C6s.

Dodge Challenger Emerges Out of Chevrolet Camaro's Shadow as Ford Mustang Continues to Lord Over the Segment

Dodge Challenger Emerges Out of Chevrolet Camaro’s Shadow as Ford Mustang Continues to Lord Over the Segment

It’s bad news all around for one of these three pony cars

The Ford Mustang still rules the roost in the muscle car segment as the Dodge Challenger runs past the Chevrolet Camaro for second place in terms of muscle car sales in 2018. The ‘Stang’s place on top of the standings remains secure, but it’s the Challenger that’s making the headlines, thanks in large part to a stronger-than-expected sales year. Of the three muscle cars, the Dodge pony car is the only one to post year-over-year growth. The Camaro, on the other hand, couldn’t have had a worse year, falling behind its two rivals in the wake of torpedoing sales. 2019 is going to be an interesting year for all three muscle cars, but for now, it’s looking like it’s going to be a two-horse race between the Mustang and the Challenger.

Budget Direct Renders Six Unique Manufacturer Collaborations

Budget Direct Renders Six Unique Manufacturer Collaborations

There are some great results, and some "close your eyes!" results

One of the great things about car renderings is the ability to let your imagination go crazy. You can use an existing car model and re-imagine it without a roof, or you can get really creative and redesign it in a different body type altogether. There’s something to be said, then, for renderings that take two models from two different automakers and combine them to create an entirely new model. It’s the kind of Transformers-like job that we should be seeing more often in the real world. Or should we? The truth is, BudgetsDirect undertook this very exercise, and the results are all “interesting,” to say the least. As an added bonus, we’re doing our own part and renaming these creations in the best way we can.

2018 Chevrolet ECOPO Camaro Concept

The iconic drag race car goes fully electric!

First introduced in 1969 and revived in 2012, the COPO Camaro celebrates 50 years with a revised version at the 2018 SEMA Show. For the first time, the drag racer is joined by an electric version. Called the ECOPO Camaro, it’s just a concept car for now, but it’s probably a preview of things to come.

The ECOPO Camaro was built in partnership with pioneering electric drag racing team Hancock and Lane Racing, as well as with the involvement of Patrick McCue, the man behind the record-holding “Shock and Awe” electric dragster. Showcased alongside the 2019 COPO Camaro and about two dozen other Chevy vehicles at SEMA, it also suggests Chevy might offer an electric motor as a crate "engine" in the future.

Chevy is Working Desperately to Move that Sleek Grille on the SEMA-Bound Camaro SS Into Production

Why did Chevrolet move it in the first place? Haven’t they heard ‘Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke’?

It’s no secret that the front fascia of the 2019 Camaro wasn’t received all that well with fans, and Chevrolet seems to have realized this. At the upcoming SEMA show later this month, Chevrolet will introduce the Camaro SS Shock Concept with a new grille design — one that Chevy wants to bring to the production model as quickly as possible.
