The Ram truck has been around in some form or fashion since Dodge started making vehicles in 1914. The Ram as we know it today got its start when Dodge put the Ram name on the then-new 1981 full size truck. Of course, the biggest change happened in 2010 when Chrysler made Ram its own brand, pulling it from under the Dodge umbrella. Now called the Ram Truck brand, Ram has been making huge strides in truck development.

New for 2009 and refreshed again in 2013, the Ram 1500 is available in an almost limitless combination of cab, bed, engine, and options. Regular, Quad, and Crew cabs come with three bed lengths and three engine options that include the base 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, the venerable 5.7-liter HEMI V-8, and the new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6.

The Ram 1500 also represents some out-of-the-box thinking in terms of packaging. A five-link rear suspension replaces the traditional leaf springs and an available air suspension gives the Ram a boost for off-roading and trailer towing. The Ram also sports an eight-speed automatic transmission sourced from ZF. The unit helps the 1500 get exceptional fuel economy while still affording it good payload and towing numbers. The truck is also available with the “Ram Box,” a set of toolboxes mounted within the bed rails that will hold anything from trailer hitches to ice and drinks.

While it’s not expected that the Ram 1500 will overtake the Ford F-150 in terms of sales volume, it is expected the Ram will be chosen for its creature comforts and smart new diesel engine.

UPDATE 7/16/2014: Ram Trucks has just announced the entire Ram lineup will comply with the SAE’s J2807 towing standards. Ram joins Toyota and General Motors in adopting the new standards, though Ram is the only automaker to adopt J2807 in for Heavy Duty trucks.

Old-School Showdown: 1991 Ford F-150 vs. 1995 Dodge Ram Tug-of-War

Old-School Showdown: 1991 Ford F-150 vs. 1995 Dodge Ram Tug-of-War

The Ford F-150 can do the hardcore jobs with utmost ease; but, how can it win a tug-of-war competition?

Back in the day, trucks were merely workhorses and didn’t come with a lot of comfort features or powerful specs. However, Ford used to offer one particular engine that, to date, is widely considered as one of the best engines ever built. Called the Ford 300, this 300 cubic-inch, or 4.9-liter, inline six-cylinder mill was so good that it stayed in production from the 1960s to 1996. The F-150 with this engine was best-suited for farmers, construction workers, and anyone that required a truck for rugged use. It was almost indestructible back then, but can it survive even today?

To know for sure, the folks at TFLClassics purchased a 1991 Ford F-150 and decided to put it to test. This included a tug-of-war with a 1994 Dodge Ram. Does the F-150 conquer the Dodge, or does it succumb to a newer, better-spec’d model?

Wallpaper of the Day: 2019 Ram 1500

Ram had to keep up with Ford and Chevy, so the time came to give the Ram 1500 a very serious update. And, a serious update is exactly what it got. And, when we say full update, we mean it is all-new with a new frame, new grille, and a completely revised interior, among other things. The fifth-gen model brings together every major selling point the truck has ever had in the best way yet it’s lighter than ever. Even the EcoDiesel V-6 got an update to deliver more power and torque while the truck can even be had with a deployable front air dam and a mild-hybrid drive system. We could talk about the new Ram 1500 all day long, but that’s not why we’re here (you can read our full review for that.) instead, we’re here because we love the look of the new 1500 and decided to make it our wallpaper of the day. Check out our hand-picked favorite or choose from a full gallery of awesome shots.

Remember How The 1994 Dodge Ram "Broke The Rules?"

Remember How The 1994 Dodge Ram "Broke The Rules?"

Marking hype that’s almost endearing

Pickups are an ever-present, widely accepted member of the American landscape. But it didn’t use to be that way. Even in the 1980s, pickups were considered tools, not family transportation. So what happened? The 1994 Dodge Ram. No, that’s no marketing baloney or brand loyalty soaking through my journalistic integrity. Dodge’s second-generation of Ram pickups is largely credited as the catalyst that transformed the American pickup from a utilitarian workhorse to a friendly companion that wasn’t out-of-place in the mall parking lot. Both Ford and General Motors soon followed Dodge’s lead in making pickups focused more on people than cargo and low costs. The most current culmination of this transformation is Ford’s new Platinum trim for the 2018 Super Duty. Dolled up with all the options, this truck flirts with a $100,000 price tag.

Most than two decades ago, Dodge designers decided to add more creature comforts and convenience features to its pickup. The interesting backstory, as told in this video, is that a designer at Chrysler’s brand new headquarters and technology center went to an area of the complex still under construction to take photos of the construction works’ pickups. The design team studied the photos (Polaroids, no less) to see how loose items were stored inside the cabs. The research resulted in innovative storage solutions considered commonplace in modern trucks. Ram was also the first to offer a four-door extended cab, offering easier entry to the rear bench. Before that, Ford and GM were only using one door on extended cabs.

Ram also introduced the first V-10 engine in a pickup with its new 1994 Ram heavy duty. The venerable Cummins inline-six turbodiesel carried over from the first-generation Ram HD. There was also a trio of engines for the Ram 1500, including the 3.9-liter V-6, the 5.2-liter V-8, and the 5.9-liter V-8. Both the V-8s had a long history with Chrysler, with older version being better known by their cubic-inch displacement of 318 and 360, respectively. Power ranged from 175 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque in the V-6 up to 230 horses and 330 pound-feet in the 5.9-liter. The big 8.0-liter V-10 offered an impressive 300 horses and a diesel-like 450 pound-feet of torque. In fact, the gasoline V-10 put down 30 pound-feet more torque than the 5.9-liter Cummins turbodiesel.

Pickups have come a long way since the early 1990s, and it’s easy to pinpoint where their transition started. The Ram’s “big-rig” styling separated it from everything on the road and continues to directly influence Ram’s design language nearly 25 years later. There’s certainly a lot to be said for that.

2015 Ram 2500 Outdoorsman

2015 Ram 2500 Outdoorsman

It’s SEMA time again and Ram is ramping up with this 2500 Outdoorsman edition. Loosely based on the 1500 Outdoorsman, this truck gets some of the same touches of Mossy Oak camo while the majority of its exterior is coated in Swamp Thing Green paint. Ram says the 2500 Outdoorsman’s color scheme makes it a perfect vehicle to make base camp with as it blends into its surroundings.

Ram has shown some pretty innovative bed solutions at past SEMA events, and this year seems to be no different. Installed here are “utility hoops” that have been used to support ladders and surfboards on past trucks. Now they serve as a framework for the bed tent. Also seen before on the 2013 Ram Sun Chaser is the concept Mopar roof rack and “Flip-up” seatback tailgate. That last feature smartly converts the tailgate into a bench seat with a fold-up seatback.

Besides the Swamp Thing paint and camo, the 2500 Outdoorsman is set apart by the 17-inch, bead-lock wheels wrapped in 35-inch BFGoodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM2 tires. Bilstein shocks and a Mopar leveling kit help the suspension keep up with the other changes. Mopar fender flairs keep mud off the paint and a side step helps ease access to the cab. A 12,000-pound winch is borrowed from the Ram Power Wagon and hides behind the black-painted front bumper.

Look for the 2500 Outdoorsman as the SEMA show gets underway in Las Vegas November 4th through 7th.

2013 Ram Superman Power Wagon

2013 Ram Superman Power Wagon

Cross-marketing stunts aren’t new in the auto industry.

It’s a great way for two companies to promote each other to two completely different audiences. Recently, a lot of auto brands and movie studios have taken this route to promote a particular movie and the car that will appear in said movie.

Alfa Romeo and Fast and Furious 6 recently did something like this a few weeks ago. Now, it’s Ram and Warner Bros’ turn to get in on the action.

With the upcoming "Man of Steel" movie set to hit theaters on June 14th, the two companies went ahead and unveiled a special edition, one-off "Man of Steel" Ram 1500 Power Wagon that was specifically built to promote the movie.

If this truck isn’t intimidating enough on its own, the specially designed Man of Steel-inspired styling will definitely get your attention.

Shortly after its unveiling, the one-off Man of Steel Power Wagon will head over to New York City on June 10th, just in time for the world premiere of the highly anticipated Superman movie. From there, the truck will go on its own tour around the country in the coming months before heading over to the auction block where it will be auctioned off for charity.

2012 Dodge Ram L'il Red Express Truck

2012 Dodge Ram L’il Red Express Truck

Back in 1978, Dodge rolled out a special edition package for its D150 pickup trucks, which were not yet named “Ram.” This new package was known internally as Package Code YH6 and featured a high-output 360-cubic-inch V-8 engine with a 4-barrel carb pumping in fuel. The engine boasted high-flow cylinder heads and an aggressive cam shave and it all hooked up to a 3.55-to-1 rear end. This package, which we all know as the L’il Red Express, only lasted two years – 1978 and 1979 – and saw only 2,188 units in 1978 and 5,118 units in 1979. This makes it one of the most sought after Dodge pickups ever built.

Well, Ram is rolling out a remake of this classic short-body pickup truck in the form of its SEMA-stationed L’il Red Express Truck. Though it is more modern than the original rendition, it certainly pays it homage rather well. It features the bright-red paint of the original, a side-stack exhaust system, and a wood-trimmed bed.

In addition, this remake of the cult classic pickup features 22-inch Mopar rims with gold inserts, a 5.7-liter HEMI engine that pumps out 390 horsepower and 407 pound-feet of torque, gold accent stripes, “Hyperblack” painted grille inserts, and a custom Katzkin (no, not “cat skin”) interior. Sure, it lacks the flare-side styling and the wood-outlined bed of the original, but it is bad-ass nonetheless.

There is no mention of this special edition ever coming to the Ram lineup, but don’t be too surprised to see it roll out in 2013 and 2014, as Chrysler loves running special-edition Rams – there have been plenty of them. One thing is for sure, it would definitely carry a higher premium than the $1,131 price for the original L’il Red Express package.

Stay tuned to find our of Chrysler plans to launch this model or not.

2012 Dodge Urban Ram

2012 Dodge Urban Ram

The new Dodge Ram pick-up will also be presented at the upcoming SEMA Show with a very cool Urban Ram concept car specially customized by Mopar. The concept features a very cool Modern Blue paint scheme combined with a Mopar blue stripe - reminder of the limited edition Mopar ’11 Charger.

The new Urban Ram Concept features a very cool sport performance hood, a new set of 22" wheels painted hyperblack and a fiberglass tonneau cover matching the body color.

The standard 2013 Ram 1500 is powered by a 392 HEMI engine, but Mopar decided is time to make it even more aggressive. For this the tuneer added new Mopar headers, a Mopar cold-air intake and Mopar performance dual exhaust with chrome tips. They did not announced how these updates improved the engine’s output, but the package also includes a Mopar performance handling kit and SRT rotors and brake calipers that help rein in all the extra power.

Report: Ram 1500 to Don a Torque-Happy Diesel Option in the Future

Report: Ram 1500 to Don a Torque-Happy Diesel Option in the Future

2013 Ram 1500

Anyone that drives a truck in a manner that it is built to be used – you know, actually hauling more than just yourself – will tell you that diesel power is the way to go. Not only are diesel engines far more reliable, but they also boast extraordinary torque for their size and historically get better fuel economy. For some reason unknown to us, the “Big Three” only offer diesel engines in their 3/4-ton and larger trucks, leaving 1/2-ton truck with only gasoline engines to choose from.

With trucks being all about towing these days more than in recent history, a lot of focus has been placed on increasing frame rigidity and driveline quality to bump up towing capacity on the entry-level 1/2-ton pickups, but little has been done to pump up the twisting power needed to get those heavy loads moving (A.K.A. torque).

Well, it looks like Chrysler is getting really serious about the Ram taking over Chevy’s No. 2 slot on the best-selling pickup list. In addition to all of the new enhancements coming in 2013, reports are pointing toward a diesel variant coming to the 1500 lineup in the near future, as test mule 1500 Rams are being spotted bearing torque-happy diesel power plants.

No, this is not a Cummins diesel engine like most would expect. The engine of choice is the VM 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine by Fiat. Before you start complaining about Ram straying away from the Cummins engine, understand that this Fiat diesel is no wimp, as it cranks out 241 ponies and 406 pound-feet of torque straight off of the shelf. Add in the fact that it gets up to 28 mpg on the highway and you have a winner.

That would put this diesel at the same torque output as the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8, but allows it to get 10 more MPG on the highway. Given the new frame enhancements in the Ram 1500, we would anticipate a towing rating well over 10,000 lbs from these diesel-power Ram 1500s.

For now, these engines are still in the testing phase, but we will keep you informed if anything changes.

Ram Teases Something Big for the 2013 Lineup

Ram Teases Something Big for the 2013 Lineup

We will preface this article by saying how odd it is to use the word “Ram” as a make and not a model. Please take note, Dodge, Ram, or whatever you want to call yourself today.

The Ram lineup of truck is in for something big, as the automaker plans to reveal an all-new addition to the lineup on April 5th. Dodge, err, Ram has begun a campaign dubbed “A Giant Awaits” where the truck builder will release one teaser picture per day until the unveiling of this new pickup. So now we get to decipher five, or so, teaser pictures of random parts of a new truck.

Today was the first day of said campaign and Ram has released the above picture. Despite Ram claiming these pictures are supposed to be “not easily identifiable,” it took us about 10 seconds to figure out it is a restyled grille on a Ram pickup. Now, we are pretty certain all of this hubbub isn’t over a new grille, but that is all Ram is showing today.

So let’s examine this cheese grater-like grille and what it may mean. That type of grille is only seen on high-performance and luxury vehicles, and Ram already has the Laramie line of luxury-style pickups, so scratch that. All that leaves is a high-performance model, unless Ram is just drawing our attention to announce that the 2013 Ram is getting the Pentastar V-6 as its base engine, which we already know from Chrysler’s SEC filings.

Dodge scrapped the SRT10 model Ram following the 2006 model year, due to low sales and the Viper’s notoriously undependable and fuel-hungry engine. But what about an SRT8 model, bearing the same 470-horsepower, 6.4-liter V-8 that the 2012 Challenger SRT8 392 does? That engine is far more reliable, less expensive to maintain and gets better gas mileage than the Viper’s 8.3-liter V-10. This is all just speculation now. Just like us, you will just have to wait until more information is released.

Following the overwhelmingly positive reaction given to the Dodge Charger Pursuit by law enforcement and municipal administrators, the Special Services Police Truck takes the reins as the big brother police truck that will run down any fleeing criminal.

Based on the Ram 1500, the truck combines durability, reliability, and crime-fighting capabilities in one package.

It’s got pretty much everything that law enforcement agencies would want in a police truck, including a unique wiring harness that was specifically engineered to endure the heavy loads of the radar, computer, lighting, and radio equipment police officers will need when they’re out and about on the road.

2011 Ram 392 Quick Silver by Mopar Underground

2011 Ram 392 Quick Silver by Mopar Underground

The Ram 392 Quick Silver is a testament on how you can add some serious character to an otherwise ’regular’ Ram R/T, all thanks to Mopar Underground. As Chrysler’s in-house tuning department, Mopar dressed up a Ram R/T for the SEMA Auto Show, complete with aesthetic and performance improvements.

The exterior of the 392 Quick Silver comes with a gloss black roof and a three-stage Bright Silver finish that’s complemented by anodized red paint on the mirrors, wheels, and grille inserts. Mopar Underground also put in a reverse deep-cowl aluminum hood with functional heat extractors and smoked lenses that act as "covers" for the pick-up’s exterior lighting. The 392 Quick Silver also boasts of a Mopar hard tonneau cover that carries an integrated spoiler and finally, a set of 22" Mopar wheels round out the exterior package of the tricked out pick-up.

As for the interior, the 392 Quick Silver boasts of high-bolster SRT seats dressed in Katzkin leather with red stitching and accents. Likewise, the steering wheel, shift knob, door panels, and center console trim also carry the same leather and red stitching combination. Entertainment was also carried out by Mopar with the addition of new Kicker speakers that with tweeters and woofers to make for excellent music blasting.

To improve on the pick-up’s performance capabilities, Mopar equipped the 392 Quicksilver with a 392 HEMI V8 engine that produces 470 horsepower, as well as a cold-air intake kit and headers, a cat-back dual exhaust system, a new suspension set-up, and a Brembo big brake kit, featuring 15-inch vented rotors and bright silver six-piston calipers in the front and rear.

Top Gear USA: Season 2 Episode 3

Top Gear USA: Season 2 Episode 3

The boys from Top Gear USA were back this week and they are starting to pick up a little bit of speed in terms of entertainment value. The discussions still tend to be a little too rehearsed, but we didn’t want to turn off the television as soon as they started talking. Well, except for when Adam opened his mouth, but we’re used to that.

The main focus this week was trying to figure out which truck was the best in America. After spending the entire first episode trying to convince us all that pick-up trucks could be convinced by two-door models, this was a welcome change. Other segments included battling it out between the Local Motors’ Rally Fighter and an airboat, and a trip around the Top Gear test track with actor/comedian Bill Engvall.

2009 - 2011 Dodge Ram HPE500 by Hennessey

2009 - 2011 Dodge Ram HPE500 by Hennessey

Hennessey isn’t just about creating uber-sexy vehicles like the Venom GT. In fact, a lot of their projects entail tuning up existing models and then slapping on an HPE title coupled with the appropriate horsepower number. The latest vehicle to be blessed with the alphanumeric title is the 2009-2011 Dodge Ram and its new HPE500 designation.

The Ram HPE500 is powered by a 5.7L Hemi that has been geeked up with a TVS2300 Supercharger System and an HPE Air Induction System to help cool the beast down. This setup can produce 505 HP at 5,400rpm when fueled with 93 Octane. Broken down, it gives the driver 422 HP at the rear wheels with a 20% boost providing the 505 HP at the engine. For comparison’s sake, the Ram SRT10 powered by the Viper’s V10 engine gets 410 HP at the rear wheels and 505 HP at the engine. The deep rumble of the truck’s new inner workings can be heard flowing out of the new stainless steel cat-back exhaust system.

If the engine upgrade isn’t enough to convince anyone of Hennessey’s involvement then the company’s badges found on the exterior of the car, as well as the floormats and the embroidered headrests will give onlookers the confirmation they need that this monster was tuned by the killer team at Hennessey.

Pricing for the installed kit is $12,950, but for those do-it-yourselfers out there, you can get the kit mailed to you for $10,950. A less involved HPE425 kit is also available for $6,950 (installed) and $4,950 (mailed kit).

2011 Ram Long Hauler Concept

2011 Ram Long Hauler Concept

The Ram Long Hauler Concept Truck is a definite eye-catcher in every sense of the word, mostly because it seems to stretch longer than standard-sized pick-up trucks. Incredibly, all this is by design.

Chrysler’s Ram brand has officially unveiled their latest concept creation, a 24-foot long quad-cab pick-up truck that’s so big it can actually carry up to 170 gallons of fuel in one go while trucking non-stop at a distance of over 1,600 miles before it needs to be fed again.

The truck is based on the Class 5 Ram 5500 Chassis Cab, except that the whole thing has been extended to ridiculous lengths. Nothing about this pick-up truck screams ordinary. Even if it’s a concept, Chrysler is presenting it as an ideal ’work horse’ for people who might need to tow heavy trailers for long distances. Judging by the look of this mastadon of a pick-up truck, we already figured as much.

Check out more details of the Long Hauler Concept, together with exhibit dates, after the jump.

2011 Dodge Ram 1500 "Code Name: Adventurer"

Dodge has just added a new entry-level model to their Ram line-up. Typically, automakers try to outshine each other with plenty of gizmos and gadgets to warrant a heftier price tag and a power struggle between them. However, Dodge has taken an entirely different route with this new model, whose name has yet to be decided upon. For now, Dodge is choosing to call the new and affordable Ram by its code name "Adventurer." This new model was produced and targeted for the first time truck buyer who doesn’t want to settle for mediocrity. Dodge figures the Tradesman is sure to be a success so why not offer another low budget truck for the masses to swallow up whole.

"We know we have the formula right," said Ram Truck President and CEO Fred Diaz. "Now we just need a great name that promotes pride of ownership. This new Ram model will be an attractive alternative for a younger or first-time buyer looking for performance at an affordable price. Case in point, it will have more horsepower and a lower base price than our competitors’ entry-level performance cars with the added benefit of versatility and capability."

In terms of power, Dodge has promised that the new "Adventurer" will borrow the same formula from the highly acclaimed 2011 Ram Tradesman recently revealed at the Chicago Show. This means we should expect to see a 5.7-liter V8 engine with an output of 390 horsepower and 407 lb.-ft. of torque tucked neatly underneath the truck’s massive hood.

The Dodge Ram 1500 "Code Name: Adventurer" will go on sale in the second quarter of 2011 at a bargain price of $23,830.

2011 Dodge Ram Tradesman

For every pencil pusher and paper shuffler sitting in a cubicle is a sweat-producing, muscle-flexing worker with plenty of equipment to tote around to their various projects. These blue-collar workers have places to go and Dodge has created a new entry-level model to make the commute that much easier. The new Dodge Ram Tradesman is an affordable option with a starting price of $22,780 with sales beginning in the second quarter of 2011.

Available in either regular cab short-bed (6 ft., 4 in.) and long-bed (8 ft.) models, the Tradesman comes with a choice of 4x2 or 4x4 powertrains, a bright chrome grille, 17" painted wheels, and numerous interior and exterior updates.

"The Ram Tradesman is named for — and aimed at — the heart of our business," said Fred Diaz, President and CEO, Ram Truck Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. "This is a hard-working truck for hard-working people. Durability, reliability and value for the money are the top three considerations for our customers. Their truck is the most important tool they own and one they’ll use every day. The Ram Tradesman is a truck they can depend on."

2010 Dodge Mopar Ram Runner

2010 Dodge Mopar Ram Runner

Who said large pick-ups can’t be cool? Mopar has brought at the SEMA Show a vehicle that wants to prove exactly the contrary. Their new Ram Runner pick-up is inspired by the Baja-style desert racing.

The rigors of off-road racing require large tires, plenty of ground clearance, extreme durability and a sophisticated suspension system capable of withstanding tremendous impact. These features are combined into a package that is stable at speed and in the corners. To achieve this kind of handling, a low center of gravity and long wheel travel are paramount. Mopar Ram Runner has the look and feel of a thoroughbred desert racer. Inspired by trophy trucks, steel front fenders and rear bed-sides are replaced with fiberglass, allowing tremendous suspension articulation with zero interference.

The package includes two stages of suspensions upgrade: Stage 1 Pre-Runner Suspension Kit is priced at $3,129 and stage 2 includes a Ram Runner Suspension Kit priced at $13,270. For the exterior package Mopar is offering front Ram Runner bumper, tubular tire carrier, front Ram Runner fenders, rear Ram Runner fenders, sport performance hood, cold-air intake system and cat-back exhaust system. The price for the entire exterior package is $17,389.

Update 02/16/2011: If you went to the SEMA Auto Show and were impressed by the Runner, then we have a good news for you: Mopar President and CEO Pietro Gorlier has announced that the kit will be street legal: "After the Ram Runner concept debuted in Moab and reaction was so positive, we went back and changed the kit to be street legal. We want to make sure buyers can enjoy it on- and off-road. Mopar will have a clearance-identification kit available. The kit will meet requirements for driving on the street with wider fenders."

2011 Ram Hemi Hauler by Hurst Performance Vehicles

2011 Ram Hemi Hauler by Hurst Performance Vehicles

Hurst Performance Vehicles has already built a pretty impressive roster of aftermarket muscle cars to its name, including a number of Camaros, Mustangs, and Challengers.

Not to be boxed into one specific segment, Hurst is thinking big for their next project. And by big, we mean a 2011 Ram 1500 pick-up. Limted to only 50 units with each model coming with its own letter of authenticity, these customized Ram pick-ups come with some pretty impressive new digs.

Aethetic upgrades on the Ram 1500 R/T regular cab includes Hurst’s traditional white and black exterior paint finish to go along with a numbered dash plaque and interior badging, and a set of 22” wheels.
In terms of performance, Hurst spared no expense in supercharging the Ram’s already monstrous 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine. On top of the addition of a supercharger, Hurst also put in a performance exhaust system. Unfortunately, Hurst is still keeping the spec numbers under wraps and as sure as the sun is hot and the sky is blue, we’re already waiting anxiously for the figures to be released.

Just like the performance specs, Hurst has yet to release the price tag for each of the 50 Hemi Hauler’s. We’re going to make a stag at the dark and say that it’s going to come at a cost of somewhere around $80,000.

Jeep Bringing a Whole Load Of Stuff To SEMA

Jeep Bringing a Whole Load Of Stuff To SEMA

The SEMA Auto Show doesn’t get going until next week, but we already have a good idea of what will be coming to the show in Las Vegas. Today, Chrysler’s Mopar Underground department has just unveiled three new off-road vehicles for the aftermarket show.

The first on offer will be twoJeeps, the J7 Stripper and the NuKaiser 715. The former will be a stripped down Wrangler with a two-inch lift kit and 35-inch Mickey Thompson off road tires. The latter will be based on the Egyptian-built J8 military-spec Jeep. It has a diesel motor and an AEV-sourced pickup bed. That bed is connected to a custom cab. It will also feature a few Mopar toys, such as rock rails, a winch bumper, and 38-inch Mud-Terrain tires.

On top of those Wranglers, Jeep will also bring one more, the Sahara Mopar Edition. There are no images of this vehicle as of now, but we do know that it will be lifted and given 35-inch tires with AEV alloy wheels. For playing in the rough stuff, the Sahara will feature steel front and rear bumpers, an integrated rear tire carrier, and a Mopar/AEV hood to add protection.

Hit the jump to see what other projects are heading to SEMA, plus a sneak preview video.

Texas Gives Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Ram Awards

Texas Gives Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Ram Awards

Dozens of automotive writers representing the Texas Auto Writers Association have just named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas.” Not a bad choice, as we found the new Jeep to be brilliant and a massive step forward for the company.

Jeep also managed to get the 2011 Wrangler Unlimited a trophy for being the “Mid-size SUV of Texas”. We’re not sure about this one, but to each their own, especially in the great state of Texas.

More than 40 members were given two-days of on- and off-road evaluation time with the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler, as well as their competitors. Everything was taken into consideration, including exterior style, off-road ability, and the overall value and fuel efficiency.

Though it might seem like Chrysler had a big day already, more was yet to come, as the 2011 Dodge Ram Laramie Longhorn was named the “Truck of Texas.” The Ram swept every category it entered, dominating the competition.

Well done Chrysler. Texas sure does love you.

2010 Dodge Ram 2500 MegaCab Laramie

2010 Dodge Ram 2500 MegaCab Laramie

Our motto at this website is ‘no boring cars’. Whether that’s sports cars, Italian exotics, or super luxurious sedans, we love them all. For this review though, we decided to change things up a bit. We wanted to find out what you can and can’t do in a truck during a week test and, living up to our motto, we went all out and got one of the biggest heavy duty trucks on the market, the 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Mega Cab.

The Ram 2500 might not be everyone’s choice for a daily driver and to be honest, it wasn’t ours either, but we put all that aside and used this four-door, four-wheel drive turbo diesel behemoth every day of the week, during which time we never came close to the truck’s full capabilities.

Although it couldn’t fit in our garage, or in a normal parking space, we did our best. Hit the jump to see how the week went and our new review style.

Hyundai: "We have no plans of selling a pickup truck in the US anytime soon"

We can now finally put this rumor to rest; there will be no pickup trucks coming from Hyundai anytime soon. That’s what the horse’s mouth made very clear when the Korean automaker shut down the rumor that was floating around last week involving Hyundai being in talks with Chrysler LLC to sell a version of the Dodge Ram pick-up re-badged under Hyundai in the US.

In a statement released by Hyundai, the automaker said: ""Hyundai Motor Co. denies that there are any current plans to bring a pickup truck of any type into the U.S. now or in the foreseeable future."

"Hyundai is not in discussion with Chrysler in regard to a selling a rebadged Chrysler Corp pickup truck, or any other vehicle, in the U.S," the statement concluded.

So there you have it, fellas. There won’t be a re-badged Dodge Ram pickup truck in Hyundai’s future, now or in the foreseeable future.

Video: Ram’s Heavy Duty Kentucky Derby commercial

.

It may not hold the same clout from people inside the advertising industry the same way the Superbowl does, but the Kentucky Derby still holds a pretty significant audience every year. As such, you can expect a number of car commercials to make their TV debuts when the Derby is being televised.

And if you watched the 136th Kentucky Derby over the weekend, chances are you might have seen the new rough-riding Ram commercial, which pretty much compares the new Heavy Duty truck to the thoroughbreds running at the Derby. The only exception is that while those stallions may not be too far ahead of their competition, the Ram Heavy Duty has no competition. At least that’s what Ram is trying to say.

Check out the ad and try not to get distracted by the voice over who seems to have caught something in his throat, hence the really raspy and ’hoarse’ voice.

Chrysler installs over-the-top building wrap celebrating "Truck of the Year" at the company headquarters

Chrysler installs over-the-top building wrap celebrating "Truck of the Year" at the company headquarters

As if people need to be reminded that Chrysler bagged Motor Trend’s "Truck of the Year" award for the 2010 Ram Heavy Duty, the company decided to announce their achievement by installing a 140-foot tall and 120-foot wide building wrap at its company headquarters at Pentastar Central in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

The building wrap is so huge that it actually covers the entire side of the Chrysler HQ, which, unless you’re blind, you will have a hard time missing. We’re all proponents of celebrating one’s achievement, but we prefer to do it in a low-key kind of way. On the other hand, Chrysler did exactly the opposite.

According to Ram Truck president and CEO, Fred Diaz, the purpose of the wrap was to "share the company’s pride in the Ram Heavy Duty - as well as the Ram 1500 - with our employees that work hard each day to support this company." Coudn’t they have just bought them all a Ram or maybe just a gift certificate to a fancy dinner?

The enormous building wrap that covers one side of the entire building can be seen by about 200,000 motorists that travel along the Interstate-75 in Auburn Hills, Mich., every day. If Chrysler really wanted to get people’s attention, this building wrap is doing a marvelous job at that.

On the first night of its release, the ad ran a total of 190 times in various networks, giving all those glued to their TV sets a first-hand look at the new Ram and how - as it says so frequently in the spot - it’s tank is full.

2010 Dodge Ram Heavy-Duty Ultimate Tow Machine

2010 Dodge Ram Heavy-Duty Ultimate Tow Machine

Amongst the wide variety of tuner creations that will be unveiled at SEMA, Mopar will be bringing along the Dodge Ram Heavy Duty Ultimate Tow Machine, a custom ride like none other. The customized pick up truck is based on a 2010 Dodge 3500 Mega Cab 4x4 Laramie, and will be one of the more functional modified rides at the show. While most aftermarket manufacturers are focusing on hot rod models with increased performance and lower ride heights, the Ultimate Tow Machine is more suited to trailer an array of automobiles to the show than star in it, but after making the drive all the way to Las Vegas, why not park it inside with all the other rides.

The bed mounted gooseneck hitch allows the Dodge 3500 to tow up to 16,450 pounds and carry as much as 5,150 pounds of cargo contained in the box in the back. The Ultimate Tow Vehicle is covered in a Bright White paint job and features a few other creature comforts aimed at making hauling a whole lot easier. For instance the pick up features a Mopar Retractable Bed Step facilitating getting in and out of the back, Uconnect Web from Mopar so that you can stay connected to the 21st century and a set of Mopar Slush Mats to make sure that the dirty work doesn’t make its way into the upholster; because after all that is what this truck is all about.

Mopar Ram R/T Concept will be revealed at SEMA

Who says the days of big horsepower are over? Don’t tell that to Chrysler’s parts arm Mopar. It’s preparing a SEMA version for the newly launched 2009 Dodge Ram 1500. When creating this special concept, the development team wanted this Ram to be something a customer could actually recreate with nothing more than a new Ram, a Mopar Accessories catalog, and a credit card.

Under the hood is the improved-for-2009 stock 5.7-liter HEMI engine pushing a 390 horsepower. The drivetrain utilizes the stock five-speed automatic fitted with a high-stall torque converter that feeds the power to a set of 4.10 rear gears. Dodge estimates the run from 0 to 60 mph to take about 5.6 seconds.

The special Ram R/T includes a Mopar dual snorkel aluminum hood, cold air intake, dual exhaust, and carbon fiber accent stripes. The suspension is dropped and the stance looks even more hunkered down thanks to the chin spoiler, and body kit that includes sill and box pieces. Rolling stock (285/45R22 front and 305/40R22 rear) spin on a set of concept 22-inch machine-face wheels with dark accent pockets produced by Alcoa.

Chrysler to cut workforce in Mexico

Chrysler to cut workforce in Mexico

Chrysler announced plans to cut 300 of its 1,700 employees at its light truck assembly plant in Saltillo, Mexico. The plant builds Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 series trucks, which are mainly exported to the United States and Canada. The plant is also expected to pick up production for Nissan trucks.

Last month GM also announced that it was cutting 600 jobs at its industrial complex in Silao, Mexico. The Silao plant produces some of GM’s GMT-900-based vehicles, as well as engines and transmissions.

Both Chrysler and GM attribute the job cuts directly to the slumping U.S. market. Though Chrysler will need to higher about 485 workers when production of its Phoenix engines starts next year in Saltillo. But there is good news for Mexican workers, Freightliner will be expected to have a new plant up and running in Mexico by 2009.

The all new 2009 Dodge Ram, presented in January 2008 at the Detroit Auto Show, is almost there. The first units should be reaching the dealerships in September.

For all the loyal Dodge Ram fans this truck should be worth the wait. The big 5.7L HEMI engine has been worked on to produce 10% more power (380hp / 404lb) and 4% better gas economy. The truck is packed with 42 clever storage spaces, such as the optional ‘ram boxes’ that act as miniature trunk space located in the rear fenders. Those boxes can be locked and are water proof as well. The interior is coming to a whole new level. With a dual tone instrument panel, featuring hand stitching and the first heated steering wheel in its class. But breaking through technology is located behind the rear wheels. The 2009 Ram will be the first pickup to receive coil over suspension. This technology is supposed to bring the Ram to another level in comfort and handling without altering its legendary capability.

We can’t wait to see if it is as good as they say it is, but it surely looks good.
