The 2020 SSC Tuatara is the production version of a supercar that SSC North American has been developing since the late 2000s. Previewed by a concept car in 2011 and a pre-production model in 2018, the 2020 Tuatara is finally ready to go into production in 2020.

Aimed at supercars like the Bugatti Chiron, Koenigsegg Jesko, and the Hennessey Venom F5, the 2020 Tuatara features a V-8 engine that generates up to 1,750 horsepower and promises to hit a top speed in excess of 300 mph. SSC Tuatara was in the news for being the world’s fastest production car. We’ll not get into the drama that unfolded regarding the record-setting run since the company has some other news for us. SSC has unveiled two iterations of the 1,750-horsepower Tuatara called the Striker and Aggressor. What’s special about them, you ask? More power in one and higher power-handling capabilities, especially downforce, in the other. Crazy, right?

Quite recently, the SSC Tuatara set out to have another go at the 300 mph (482.8 km/h) barrier. However, there was an unexpected setback, which resulted in the American hypercar being wrecked. The accident happened in Utah on April 13, when the carrier flipped over due to the high winds on I-15. Actually, this is the very same #001 car that claimed the title of the fastest production car back in January.

The SSC Tuatara’s claim as the fastest production car in the world appears to finally have some legitimacy to it after the American hypercar clocked a record-setting, two-way average speed of 282.6 mph at the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds that’s located on the premises of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The new attempt at the top speed record comes a few months after SSC came under heavy scrutiny for claiming that the Tuatara had reached a top speed of 331.1 mph. Inconsistencies with the videos that SSC released to the media led to people questioning the validity of SSC’s claims, to which the automaker responded by saying that it would attempt another record run. Well, that record run has happened, and unless SSC makes another monumental snafu in verifying the validity of this new record run, it does appear that the Tuatara hypercar is now the fastest production car in the world.

The dust has barely settled on Nevada’s Route 160 where SSC’s latest hypercar, the Tuatara, reportedly broke the world speed record for a production car after reaching 331 mph on October 10th and the American automaker is set to return to the highway or a different stretch of road to do it all over again. As doubts mounted over the credibility of SSC’s claims, CEO and Founder Jerod Shelby himself vowed to give it another go in a bid to clear his and the company’s name following the "stained" record attempt.

SSC made headlines earlier this month when it announced that it had set a new world record for production cars with the Tuatara. The American company revealed that its latest supercar hit an average top speed of 316 mph during a two-way run on a closed road in Nevada, taking the official record from Koenigsegg and also breaking the unofficial record of the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+, the first production car to surpass the 300-mph mark.

But famed YouTubers Shmee150 and Misha Charoudin are questioning SSC’s record-setting run and video, suggesting that the speeds shown in the onboard footage aren’t real. The company issued a follow-up statement, but it did not address the errors discovered in its videos. Should SSC run a new record-setting attempt?

We’ve been waiting on SSC (Shelby Supercars) for over seven years as the American manufacturer kept upping the hype on its upcoming Tuatara hypercar that was meant to pick up where the SSC Ultimate Aero left off as the fastest car in the world. With 304 mph the target set by Bugatti, SSC hit the Nevada desert and more than made up for the wait by exceeding 330 mph in what was considered as tough conditions.

After nine years of development, the SSC Tuatara finally went into production in 2020, with the first customer car showcased in February. Ever since it started working on the Tuatara, SSC said it will attempt a Guinness Book top speed record for production cars. And it seems it might have already happened.

The latest bit has yet to be proven, but in an interview with Top Gear, SSC Head Jerod Shelby, has confirmed that the company has found a driver and a suitable location for its long-awaited top-speed run. This aside, the SSC Tuatara doesn’t come cheap with a price than runs nearly $2 million – something that leaves it available to, well, the top 0.5-percent of the world’s population. Now, we’ve learned that a smaller, more affordable model is coming.

The SSC Tuatara is not yet available to customers, but SSC North America is hard at work to deliver its new-generation supercar. The company’s latest YouTube video is titled "Speed" and shows the Tuatara being driven really fast. It seems that the supercar is quite quick from a standstill and the footage taken from the engine compartment reveals an angry and cool-sounding V-8 engine. The video features the hashtag #lifebeginsat300, which confirms that SSC is still planning a record run beyond the 300-mph mark.

Originally unveiled in 2011 as a concept car, the SSC Tuatara has finally evolved into a production car. It was shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2018, and it promises to be faster and more powerful than its predecessor, the Ultimate Aero.

Established in 1999, SSC North America, formerly known as Shelby SuperCars Inc., took the supercar market by surprise when it established a new world speed record for production cars with the Ultimate Aero in 2007. Driven to a top speed of 256.18 mph, the Aero surpassed the Bugatti Veyron’s 253.7-mph benchmark. The French firm regained its record three years later with Super Sport, which hit a certified top speed of 267.81 mph.

Eight years have passed since then, and the speed record is now being held by the Koenigsegg Agera RS at 277.9 mph, but SSC promises to move the benchmark into 300-mph territory with the Tuatara. Let’s find out more about that in the review below.

The SSC Tuatara is one of those cars that have been in the works for so long that most people have actually forgotten about it. Now, the buzz is going again and, after seeing a prototype on the road in December, we drool over footage of the hypercar sitting still and revving its 5.9-liter, twin-turbocharged, V-8 engine. Let’s hope it will finally be available to buy sometime in 2019, with or without the bragging rights of having broken the 300 mph barrier.

SSC, formerly known as Shelby SuperCars, first unveiled the Tuatara Concept on the lawn of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance back in 2011. The Tuatara has since made a few more public appearances, and the latest is at a dealer in Connecticut where it was filmed by youtuber WVM3DreamDrives and, frankly, it looks fantastic in that polar white color.

Between 2006 and 2013, SSC North America (formerly known as Shelby SuperCars) held the title of fastest production car in the world thanks to its 256-mph Ultimate Aero rear-/mid-engine coupe. SSC was eventually dethroned by the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, but now, the U.S.-based boutique automaker is stepping back in the ring with the Tuatara. The question is - does it have what it takes to best the current crop of outrageous top speed-makers?
