Audi recently unveiled its very own charging lounge concept. It is currently opening the first of them to the public at a very visible location, i.e at the Nuremberg Exhibition Center in Germany.

Audi is testing this new charging model in action for the first time with this pilot location. The fast-charging station features reservable high-power charging bays, along with a lounge area with a vending machine that will serve customers as they put some juice back into their EVs.

When the Audi TT was released in America in the early 2000s, the styling and design were unlike anything we had seen before. It had a body that managed to be both futuristic and retro at the same time, not to mention it was one of the first examples of a manufacturer using headlights and taillights, not just as a necessity, but as a design feature.

For a while, we have been hearing about Porsche and Audi planning to enter Formula One. Volkswagen has been trying to find ways of gaining a foothold in the F1 racing series, since 2010 and now, the German automotive giant might finally be on to something. Audi e-Tron owners, 2019-20 model years, receive a free software update that will add about 12 miles or 20 kilometers to its total range. The update also optimized the thermal management along with electrical losses in the motor. It is after three years that the company rolled out an update to improve the mileage efficiency of its first-ever EV, and for starters, the overall mileage was not that great if compared to the likes of the Jaguar I-Pace, and the Tesla Model Y.

This was a very important thing to take note of as it signals at least some uniqueness for the future of the Audi Brand as it shifts into full scale electrification. That shift, which was once thought to be closer to a decade away, is now on the horizon as new reports say that the Audi brand is about to take a big leap forward much sooner than expected, leaving the brand as we know it in the past. The Volkswagen Group is currently busy deciding what to do with some of its brands. As polarizing as it is, Tesla has a great merit in the whole dynamics that sit behind the current wave of electric cars reaching the market. In simple words, Elon Musk’s company acted as the spark that ignited the trend.

Sure, some external factors such as Dieselgate only added more momentum to the EV movement, but credit must be given to Tesla nonetheless. From that point of view, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Audi is hot on the trails of Tesla as it looks to “catch up” with the electric car maker.

Remember when I told you that Audi Sport will phase out ICE-power RS models? Well, now thanks to the same cost-cutting measures – probably thanks to parent company Volkswagen – Audi may be forced to either axe two of its most important models or do something new with them entirely. Regardless of what happens, it certainly looks like the Audi R8 and TT won’t be sticking around too much longer, at least not as we know them today, anyway.

As automakers shift deeper into electrification, the option of having a pure, unelectrified combustion engine is slowly fading away. Range anxiety is the biggest con of any EV today. Even though companies are constantly improving range figures and charging times, the fear of a depleting battery is still one of the biggest reasons why people are apprehensive to make the shift.

Things get worse when it comes to hauling and towing stuff. Since towing or hauling anything puts extra stress on the powertrain, the range is bound to take a hit; and Audi’s recent experiment just proved the same. So, as far as utility is concerned, EVs still have a long way to go until they replace internal combustion engined SUVs and trucks in all senses.

Audi is gearing up for a raft of changes throughout its model range in 2019 that sees a number of cars get their facelifts done while adding some new models to the lineup like the e-Tron SUV.

Audi’s global sales figure barely went up by 0.6% last year and, while 2018 stats look better, Mercedes-Benz and BMW are still the key reference points. In the U.S., Audi’s growth is a bit more visible, sitting at about 7.75% between 2016 and 2017, with the current trend seemingly still strong on its feet.
