How Is The Maverick On The Outside?

The 2022 Ford Maverick is underpinned on the same C2 platform as the front-wheel-drive Bronco Sport and Escape. It looks pretty decent for the price bracket it is serving in. A bar in the grille runs into the headlights to make it look a little less generic. The bottom half of the front bumper, complete rear bumper, and the side skirts are composed of black plastic. It comes with halogen headlights as standard, but LEDs are available, too.

The truck comes with 17- and 18-inch wheels in a variety of designs. 225/65 section all-season tires are offered as standard. All-terrain tires are also available in two different sizes – 225/65 and 235/65. Opt for the 4K tow package and you get 225/60 section tires.

The Maverick is offered in a single body style + bed size option. It comes with a SuperCrew layout with a 4.5-foot-bed. Ford calls this the Flexbed. It is “packed with standard features and opportunities to transform the cargo box into a complete makerspace”. It comes with moveable tie-down cleats as well, to make tying down stuff a lot easier.

In the top trim, the Maverick is available in 11 different exterior shades:

Rapid Red shade can be had if you equip the Lariat Luxury package, First Edition package, and Ford Co-Pilot360. These cost $5,870 in total. Phew!

How Big Is The Ford Maverick?

The 2022 Maverick is 199.7 inches long, 72.6 inches wide, and 68.7 inches tall. It has a 121.1-inch long wheelbase. The front and rear tracks are 63.4- and 62.8 inches wide. As for the ground clearance, the front-wheel-drive model sits 8.3 inches off the ground, whereas the al—wheel-drive model sits 8.6 inches up.

The approach angle on the all-wheel-drive model is rated at 21.6 degrees, breakover angle at 18.1 degrees, and departure angle at 21.2 degrees.

How Much Does The Maverick Weigh?

With the 2.5-liter hybrid mill under the hood, the Maverick weighs 3,674 pounds. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine is lighter at the onset, weighing in at 3,563 pounds. Equip it with the all-wheel-drive system and you’ll see an increase of 163 pounds, bringing the weight to 3,731 pounds.

How Is The 2022 Maverick On The Inside?

The Maverick has a neat layout inside the cabin. It features cloth seats in the base trim, plaid cloth seats in the mid-trim, and leatherette on the top Lariat trim. Behind the steering wheel is a 4.2-inch screen in the instrument cluster. The Lariat Maverick comes with a bigger 6.5-inch screen here.

The compact comes with an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also comes with two USB ports as standard and you can have two more for extra moolah. Even wireless charging is available. Ford has also introduced an integrated tether system in here or a variety of removable accessories like cup holders and grocery bag hooks.

How Big Is The Maverick On The Inside?

The two-row Maverick is fairly spacious on the inside for a compact truck. In the front row, it offers 40.3 inches of headroom, 42.8 inches of legroom, 57.3 inches of shoulder room, and 55.4 inches of hip room. At the rear, too, things aren’t too bad. It offers headroom of 39.6 inches, legroom of 35.9 inches, shoulder room of 55.6 inches, and hip room of 54.1 inches.

The 2022 Ford Maverick Will Be Offered With Two Engine Options

The Ford Maverick will be available with two different engines.

The standard option is a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that makes 162 horses and 155 pound-feet of torque.

Combined with the electric motor, it can churn out up to 191 ponies. It comes mated to a full-hybrid system. Power is sent to the front wheels via a lousy CVT, but at least it helps achieve good fuel economy coupled with the hybrid system. How good, you ask? Ford says the projected EPA-estimated range is 40 mpg. You can travel up to 500 miles on a full tank of gas. That’s pretty good for a ‘pickup truck’.

The other engine is the optional 2.0-liter, four-cylinder EcoBoost engine that dishes out 250 horses and 277 pound-feet of torque. This is identical to the Bronco Sport. This engine is available with an all-wheel-drive system and is paired to an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

2022 Ford Maverick Towing and Payload Capacity

The Ford Maverick can tow up to 2,000 pounds as standard. If you opt for the EcoBoost engine, you can avail the 4K Tow Package that will allow you to tow up to 4,000 pounds. The maximum payload capacity is rated at 1,500 pounds with both engines.

There’s A Special Edition Maverick, Too

The top-spec Lariat trim can also be had with a First Edition package. It comes with many distinct features that make it special, such as:

It comes with the 2.5-liter hybrid engine as standard. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine is optional and you need to opt for it if you want the all-wheel-drive system. When equipped with the EcoBoost mill, you can upgrade to 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires.

The First Edition Package is priced at $1,495.

How Much Does The 2022 Ford Maverick Cost?

Here’s the starting price of every Maverick trim with the 2.5-liter, four-cylinder hybrid engine:

• XL - $19,995
• XLT - $22,280
• Lariat - $25,490

You can opt for the EcoBoost engine on every trim for an additional amount of $1,085. This brings the price to:

• XL - $21,080
• XLT - $23,365
• Lariat - $26,575

The all-wheel-drive system is offered only with the optional EcoBoost engine and costs $3,305. Destination charges of $1,495 are additional.

2022 Ford Maverick Competition

Hyundai Santa Cruz

Hyundai is coming up with a compact truck to take on the Ford Maverick. Actually, it’s the other way round as the Santa Cruz arrived first. It’s going to be tough for the Korean automaker to compete here as it is fairly new to this niche, whereas Ford has been dominating the pickup segment for decades. Perhaps, that is why Hyundai steered clear and came up with a ‘Sport Adventure Vehicle’ instead of a proper pickup truck. Yeah, Hyundai calls Santa Cruz an SAV for some reason!

The Santa Cruz is based on the Tucson and shares the same design elements, like the handsome cascading grille up front. What justifies Hyundai’s move to call it an ‘SAV’ is the C-pillar that doesn’t have a straight drop as you see in trucks generally. It is angled to differentiate it from a conventional truck.

On the inside, it comes with an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system. A 10.25-inch touchscreen system comes as standard on the higher trims. Stuff like power-adjustable seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, under-seat storage at the rear are also present.

The Santa Cruz is also a unibody construction and will be offered with two engine options – The base engine is a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder mill that will make an estimated 190 ponies and 180 pound-feet of torque. The same engine is offered in a turbocharged form that will produce an estimated 275 horses and 310 pound-feet of twist. The truck, err., SAV comes with a front-wheel-drive layout as standard, but an all-wheel-drive system is also available.

The Hyundai vehicle can tow much better than the Ford. The non-turbo engine can tow up to 3,500 pounds, whereas the turbo option with the all-wheel-drive configuration will be able to tow up to 5,000 pounds. To remind you, the Maverick can tow up to 2,000 pounds as standard and 4,000 pounds with the tow package. The maximum payload capacity, however, is rated at 1,410 pounds, which 90 pounds less than the Maverick.

Hyundai hasn’t revealed the pricing yet, even though it was launched quite some time back. All you can do for now is place a $100 deposit and reserve your truck. Was Hyundai waiting for Ford to reveal the Maverick’s pricing? We’ll have to wait for the prices to be revealed, but with the features on offer, we doubt it can undercut the Maverick’s pricing. We speculate the Santa Cruz to start around $28,000 and top out at $45,000. The Santa Cruz will arrive in summer 2021.

Ford has mentioned that the Maverick will go on sale from fall 2021. It will be manufactured at Hermosillo Assembly Plant, Sonora, Mexico.
