• 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat

The Challenger made its fateful return to Dodge’s lineup in 2008 following decades of remaining dormant. For the 2015 model year, the Challenger received a refresh that included a set of taillights that hark back to the 1971 model year. Those fancy taillights are small potatoes when compared to the big news of 2015, the addition of the 700-plus-horsepower Challenger SRT Hellcat.

The wait if finally over, ladies and gentlemen! Dodge has unleashed its most powerful Challenger ever — the Hellcat. Rumored since early last year and initially expected to show up at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, the monstrous muscle car was raised from the dark pits of Hell with a huge, supercharged, 6.2-liter, V-8 mill under the hood and an appearance that will make the Shelby GT500 tremble in fear.

Needless to say, the Challenger Hellcat is the first product of the newly consolidated Dodge and SRT brands, a range-topping model that will sit above the already beefed-up 392 HEMI Scat Pack Shaker that we’ve seen during the New York Auto Show last month.

"The new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is the ultimate performance muscle car," said Tim Kuniskis, Dodge president and CEO, naming it "a true GT car with an all-new driver-focused interior." The beastly coupe will be built at Chrysler’s Brampton Assembly plant in Ontario, Canada, but production won’t begin until the third quarter of 2014.

If you’re as excited as we are, waiting that long to see and drive the most powerful Challenger ever made will be painful to say the least. However, that gives us more than enough time to go through all the details and find out what the Hellcat is made of. Aside from the supercharged, V-8 HEMI we’re already drooling over...

Updated 07/16/2014: Pricing for the 2015 Challenger Hellcat SRT have been officially confirmed by Chrysler: $59,995 (excluding $995 destination and including $2,100 gas-guzzler tax; $1,700 gas-guzzler tax on models with the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic

Why Hellcat?

- image 552785

Some enthusiasts have been wondering why Dodge chose the Hellcat name for the supercharged HEMI engine ever since the first rumors about the new powerplant started to surface on the web. While he company has yet to provide an official explanation, it appears the engine is actually named after a Grumman World War II fighter plane that had its engines build by Nash. The now defunct company later joined Hudson to form AMC (American Motors), which Chrysler acquired in 1987.

It’s not clear whether or not the said trademark lived on under AMC and Chrysler, but the Hellcat fighter plane was of great importance to the U.S. army during World War II, which would explain naming the engine after it. With more than 5,000 enemy aircrafts destroyed and a kill-to-loss ratio of around 19:1, the Hellcats were the most efficient fighter planes the Allies used above the Pacific.

A redesigned bumper with quad projector lamps adds to the Hellcat’s menacing looks, while a large splitter pushes the muscle car harder to the ground

Just like the facelifted 2015 Challenger we’ve seen last month, the Hellcat also benefits from a 1971-inspired update. Although the split front grille has been replaced by a cleaner piece, the separate taillights and the pronounced power-bulge hood have been maintained on the SRT-prepped machine. But those aren’t the only noticeable differences on the Hellcat. The hood now features dual air extractors for better heat removal and reduced air turbulence in the engine compartment, as well as an exclusive Air Catcher inlet port.

A redesigned bumper with quad projector lamps adds to the Hellcat’s menacing looks, while a large splitter pushes the muscle car harder to the ground. `Round back, differences are less obvious, but the Hellcat does come with a taller spoiler that wears an "SRT" logo on the right side.

From the side, the Hellcat stands out, thanks to its "Supercharged" fender badges, a redesigned rear valance and new side sills, which have been carefully tuned in the wind tunnel for improved aerodynamic properties.

The first things that catch the eye are the redesigned, SRT-branded steering wheel with a flat bottom, and the unique gauges and digital graphics that are finished in a Dark Radar Red hue

The Hellcat’s interior is basically standard Challenger, but there are a few details that set the supercharged version apart from the regular models. The first things that catch the eye are the redesigned, SRT-branded steering wheel with a flat bottom, and the unique gauges and digital graphics that are finished in a Dark Radar Red hue. The Hellcat’s exclusivity continues with "Dark Engine Turn" aluminum trims and French-seamed accent stitching for the leather-wrapped surfaces.

Customers that order their Hellcat with the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission will also gain a brand-new electronic shifter with a driver-oriented T-handle. The manual version, on the other hand, will bring a throwback ball shifter.

Just like the rest of the Challenger SRT lineup, the Hellcat benefits from standard heated and ventilated front seats with large side bolsters and SRT-embroidered Nappa leather/Alcantara trimming. A Laguna premium upholstery in either sepia or black will be offered as part of an equipment package.

Although Dodge initially announced that the Hellcat engine will generate 600-plus ponies, the final output comes to a staggering 707-horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque.

Although Dodge initially announced that the Hellcat engine will generate 600-plus ponies, the final output comes to a staggering 707-horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. This not only makes the Challenger Hellcat the most powerful Challenger ever created, but also the most powerful, factory-built muscle car ever! With more oomph than the Viper at its disposal, the Hellcat will have no trouble in reaching 60 mph from a standing start in under four seconds and expect those quarter-mile times to drop near the low 11s.

The new mill can be had with either the upgraded Tremec six-speed manual or the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic and comes with a forged-steel crankshaft and a unique, specially tuned crank damper. Also, squeezing so much power out of the 6.2-liter HEMI wouldn’t have been possible without the use of high-strength, forged-alloy pistons and heat-treated aluminum-alloy cylinder heads.

Though Chrysler has its 6.4-liter 392 HEMI engine available, the engineers deemed it necessary to destroke the large engine for added strength. The shortened stroke can mostly be attributed to a beefier forged-steel crankshaft held in place by induction-hardened bearing surfaces on the main bearings. Extra strength connecting rods are also present. The engine block retains its cast-iron construction, also for strength reasons, as firing pressures inside the cylinders reach nearly 1,600 psi. All told, roughly 90 percent of the Hellcat’s internals are new when compared to the current 392 HEMI.

As for the supercharger, Chrysler had a few options to consider, but finally settled on a Lysholm-style unit made by Japan’s IHI Corporation. The Lysholm unit is more efficient than the typical Roots-type supercharger by allowing less air leakage and a reduced amount of parasitic power loss. A special coating of PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) on the twin screws and synthetic lubricant helps the 2.38-liter blower make power up to its 14,600-rpm redline. And though the blower features a one-way clutch for added refinement, it doesn’t remove that unmistakable supercharger whine while under throttle.

And speaking of throttle, the supercharger and engine are fed through a massive 92-mm throttle body, a twin-inlet, 8.0-liter air filter box, and the functional hood scoop. The setup is the largest in Chrysler’s history.

What’s more, the Hellcat will be delivered with two standard key fobs; one colored black that limits the vehicle to a reduced engine output and a red one that unleashes all 707 ponies trapped under the hood.

With the black key fob, the car enters a Valet Mode, reducing output to (only?) 500 horsepower, limiting peak revs to 4,000, locking out the TorqueFlite’s low first gear, and short-shifting up-shifts. It also disables launch control and the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and sets the suspension setting to the least-aggressive “Street” mode. This function can be activated and deactivated using a four-digit PIN code. Sure, a valet can still have one hell of a good time in it, but he surely won’t be able to go all "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off" on your precious Hellcat.

It’s unclear still if these functions will still be present with the available Tremec six-speed manual transmission.

Though Dodge hasn’t officially revealed the 0-to-60-mph time, reports allude to a mid-three-second sprint. This is not unlikely after seeing the Hellcat rip off an 11.2-secon quarter-mile run on street tires and 10.8-seconds on drag radials.

The Challenger Hellcat is fitted brand-new 15.4-inch Brembo two-piece rotors with six-piston calipers at all four corners

Naturally, the sport-tuned suspension comes standard on the Hellcat, along with a set of SRT-exclusive, “Slingshot” split-seven spoke 20-inch wheels crafted from lightweight, forged aluminum. The rollers are finished in matte black and wrapped in new Pirelli P Zero Nero tires that provide all-season traction. The wheels can be had in a dark-bronze color with an extra check on the options list.

Moving over to the brakes, the Challenger Hellcat is fitted brand-new, 15.4-inch Brembo two-piece rotors with six-piston calipers at all four corners, making it the largest front-brake package ever mounted on an SRT-badged vehicle. The new brakes work together with a new anti-lock braking system, ESC and traction control systems that are uniquely tuned for the Hellcat.

Prices

The 707-horsepower missile will retail from $59,995 excluding $995 destination and including $2,100 gas-guzzler tax; $1,700 gas-guzzler tax on models with the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic. The sticker makes the Hellcat more expensive than both the supercharged Shelby GT500 and Camaro ZL1, but places it below track-ready Camaro Z/28. Nonetheless, the Hellcat is cheaper than initially anticipated and quite the bargain given its enormous output and the lightning-fast, sub-12-second quarter-mile time it can return.

Officially the most powerful, factory-built muscle car ever to roll out of Detroit, the Challenger SRT Hellcat sits at the top of the Challenger lineup, superseding the $46,000 SRT 392.

Competitors

Shelby GT500

2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Exterior AutoShow
- image 447981

Like the Challenger Hellcat, the Shelby GT500 is the most powerful and the fastest Mustang ever built. Only if we ignore the much rarer Super Snake and Shelby 1000, that is. Crafted with help from the performance company founded by Carroll Shelby himself, the GT500 is motivated by a 5.8-liter, V-8 engine and a 2.3-liter TVS supercharger that generate a total of 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque. The combo is mated exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission, with no automatic box on the options list.

The Dearborn-built muscle car needs just 3.5 seconds to sprint from 0 to 60 mph and reaches a top speed of 202 mph. The Ford-badged coupe is awfully fast on the drag strip as well, needing just 11.8 seconds to complete the quarter mile. Interestingly enough, the GT500 returns 15 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, something the Challenger Hellcat will find very hard to beat.

The 2014 Shelby GT500 retails from $55,110 and will likely be discontinued as the 2015 Mustang starts coming off the assembly line this fall.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

2014 - 2015 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 High Resolution Exterior Wallpaper quality
- image 543067

The 2014 Camaro ZL1 is the least powerful of the pack, with "only" 580 horsepower and 556 pound-feet of torque shaking the hood. The oomph is generated by a supercharged, 6.2-liter, V-8 engine based on the LS9 unit from the Corvette ZR1 and goes to the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission. The Camaro ZL1 screams to 60 mph from a standing start in about four seconds and reaches its top speed at 184 mph.

Unlike the Shelby GT500 and the Dodge Challenger Hellcat, the ZL1 can also be had in a Convertible version. The GM-built muscle car benefits from state-of-the-art Magnetic Ride Control technology and a Performance Traction Management system that increases stability on track. Pricing for the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 begins at $55,355.

Conclusion

With 707 horsepower under its hood, the Dodge Challenger Hellcat needs no resume to knock at the gates of muscle car stardom. With the 662-horsepower Shelby GT500 out of the way, the Challenger Hellcat has no true competitor until either Ford or Chevrolet come up with something more extreme. Will the new supercharged Challenger help the nameplate beat its rivals in terms of sales? Not likely, but it will make a hell of a road-and-track toy for those who can afford it.

Driven by the five SRT performance hallmarks, the new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT and Challenger SRT with the Hellcat engine are re-designed and totally re-engineered to be the most true-to-form muscle coupes on the market with performance-enhancing technologies inside and out. The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat will feature the most powerful V-8 engine ever produced by Chrysler Group – the supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8.

“The new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is the ultimate performance muscle car,” said Tim Kuniskis, President and CEO – Dodge Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “Dodge is the Mainstream Performance brand, and now combined with SRT, we are able to unleash a true GT car with an all-new driver-focused interior and the TorqueFlite eight-speed transmission combined with the most powerful V-8 Chrysler has ever produced. The Challenger Hellcat has been released!”

The 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT coupes will be built at the Brampton (Ont.) Assembly plant. Production is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2014.

Awe-inspiring powertrains

For 2015, the Challenger SRT with a Hellcat engine is propelled by the new supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8. Its 600-plus horsepower rating will be the highest of any V-8 engine in Chrysler Group’s celebrated history. The all-new V-8 engine can be mated with an upgraded six-speed manual transmission or a beefy, new TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic – the first such gearbox ever offered in the Dodge Challenger SRT’s time-honored segment.

This new HEMI® Hellcat engine is Dodge and SRT’s first application of V-8 supercharger technology, delivering the full brand experience with fresh potency.

The breakthrough supercharged engine features a forged-steel crankshaft with induction-hardened bearing surfaces. The result is a crank so well-engineered it can withstand firing pressures of 110 bar (1,595 psi) – the equivalent of five family sedans standing on each piston, every two revolutions. And its unique, specially tuned crank damper has been tested to 13,000 rpm.

High-strength, forged-alloy pistons – developed using advanced telemetry measurement – are coupled to powder-forged connecting rods with high-load-capacity bushings and diamond-like-carbon-coated piston pins.

The new supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8 has premium-grade, heat-treated aluminum-alloy cylinder heads that are optimized for superior thermal conductivity. And its die-cast aluminum rocker covers are HEMI Orange.

In addition to the supercharged HEMI V-8 in the Challenger SRT Hellcat, the new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT model also gets a power boost with upgrades to the 392 HEMI V-8. Horsepower climbs to 485 from 470, while peak torque jumps to 475 lb.-ft. from 470 lb.-ft.

The 392 also can be mated with a new TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic or the proven six-speed manual transmission.

All-new Drive Modes tailor the driving experience to each individual driver

Whether its on-road or on-track, Challenger SRT owners can personalize their drive experience via the all-new Drive Modes feature. Drive Modes tailor the driving experience by controlling horsepower, transmission shift speeds, steering (Challenger SRT only), paddle shifters (automatic transmission only), traction and suspension. Drive Modes are pre-configured for Sport, Track and Default settings, while the Custom setting lets the driver customize the drive experience to their favorite settings.

Custom - Allows the driver to personalize the vehicle’s performance
Sport - Delivers increased vehicle performance capability over the Default Mode

Unlocking the power

For the first time in Chrysler Group history, the all-new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT with a Hellcat engine comes standard with two key fobs – red and black. The red key fob is the only key that can unlock the full horsepower and torque potential of the Challenger SRT Hellcat engine; while the black key fob limits the driver to a reduced engine output.

Valet Mode is offered on both Challenger SRT and Challenger SRT with a Hellcat engine. When Valet Mode is activated, the following vehicle configurations are enabled:

Engine is remapped to significantly reduce horsepower and torque; limited to 4,000 rpm
Transmission locks out access to first gear and upshifts earlier than normal
Transmission will treat the manual shifter position the same as the drive position
Traction, steering and suspension are set to their “Street” settings
Steering-wheel paddle shifters are disabled
Drive Mode functions are disabled
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is enabled to Full-on
Launch Control is disabled

The driver can activate and deactivate Valet Mode with a four-digit PIN code they create.

Outstanding ride and handling

The 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT rides on new, SRT-exclusive “77” eight-spoke 20 x 9-inch forged-aluminum “Hyper Black” wheels. Standard 245/45ZR20 (front and rear) Goodyear RSA2 All-Season or available Goodyear F1 Supercar Three-Season tires deliver serious grip and handling.

Standard wheels on the Challenger SRT with the Hellcat engine are new SRT-exclusive “Slingshot” split-seven spoke 20 x 9.5-inch, lightweight forged-aluminum wheels with a matte black finish; available on the SRT 392 as part of the SRT Track Pack. New P275/40ZR20 Pirelli P Zero Nero tires (front and rear) provide all-season traction while the newest tire technology from Pirelli includes the class exclusive four-season tire that is Y-Plus rated to handle the extreme speeds. Pirelli P Zero tires are available for three-season performance driving.

Available on the Challenger SRT Hellcat are 20 x 9.5-inch, lightweight forged-aluminum wheels with a Brass Monkey/dark bronze finish.

Benchmark braking

Standard on the 2015 Challenger SRT with the Hellcat engine is the largest front-brake package ever offered in an SRT vehicle, featuring all-new 390-mm (15.4-inch) Brembo two-piece rotors with six-piston calipers for outstanding heat management/thermal capacity and longevity. This upgraded high-performance brake package is available on the 392 HEMI® SRT model as part of the SRT Track Pack.

New anti-lock braking system (ABS), ESC and traction control systems are uniquely tuned and configurable for specific tire and powertrain configurations.

Aggressive and functional exteriors

Dodge and SRT designers and engineers spent 35 percent more time in the Chrysler Group’s full-scale wind tunnel in Auburn Hills, Michigan, (compared with the previous-generation Dodge Challenger SRT) developing and further refining the aggressive and functional exteriors on the Challenger SRT and Challenger SRT Hellcat. The result is a re-engineered Challenger capable of maximum aerodynamic performance for spirited driving on the road or the race track.

At the front, new fascia designs and all-new vertical-split grille provide a menacing update of its 1971 inspiration. A larger, power-bulge aluminum hood features a dedicated “cold-air” intake – a visual styling cue from the first Viper coupe built in 1996.

The hood on the new Dodge Challenger SRT with a Hellcat engine also includes dual air extractors to ensure effective removal of heat and reduced air turbulence in the engine compartment. The hood is standard in body color and is available in a Satin Black finish. Both models of the Challenger SRT feature all-aluminum hoods designed to reduce weight.

Another key design element on the Challenger SRT Hellcat is the exclusive Air Catcher inlet port, which feeds ram-air directly into the engine air box through the driver-side parking lamp.

All-new quad projector headlamps give a more detailed appearance, while a more aggressive brow “chops” the upper portion of the lamp design for an even more sinister attitude.

Integrated projector fog lamps on the Challenger 392 SRT are pushed to the lower corners to help accentuate the car’s width while illuminating the road. A new duck-bill fascia splitter helps improve the vehicle’s aerodynamics.

The Dodge Challenger SRT with a Hellcat engine features a larger front splitter designed for optimal downforce to minimize lift.

From the side, the signature muscular proportions and large thruster rear-quarter panels stand out from the crowd, while fender and belt lines tie together at the front and rear of the car to create a sleeker appearance. Differentiating the Challenger SRT Hellcat from the rest of the Challenger lineup are its “SUPERCHARGED” fender badges. Black sills accentuate the proportions of the muscle coupe and have been tuned in the wind tunnel to improve aerodynamics.

Out back, the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT recalls the historic 1971 model’s styling with a new split tail-lamp design and rear fascia. The tail lamps feature the new signature LED graphic with its smooth glow of light that can be seen from blocks away. A redesigned rear valance helps the 2015 Challenger SRT models look more planted on the ground. A unique, taller rear spoiler on the SRT Hellcat features a raised SRT logo.

Race-inspired, high-performance interiors

Inside the 2015 Dodge Challenger is an all-new enthusiast-centric cockpit with world-class materials, execution and technology. Key elements are inspired by the interior of the 1971 Challenger.

The performance cockpit of the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT carries an essence of the 1971 Challenger, in an artistic and more organically styled way.

The all-new cleanly executed instrument panel features a stamped aluminum bezel, which sets the tone for the driver’s display. For a high-tech look, an innovative 7-inch driver-selectable driver information display (DID) screen is centered in the gauge cluster and provides an almost infinitely customizable display. The all-new DID screen is flanked by new analog speedometer and tachometer gauges, which provide a heritage-inspired look with concave shapes and a hub-covered needle design, reminiscent of the “tic-toc-tach” gauges from the 1971 Challenger. For the Challenger SRT with the Hellcat engine, the fixed gauges and digital graphics are finished in a Dark Radar Red tone to make it even more unique.

Additionally, the dashboard’s center stack neatly houses the new standard 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen. New for 2015 drivers can select one of the many offered backgrounds to connect the digital look and feel with their chosen interior package.

A new, trapezoidal shaped stamped aluminum center console provides Challenger SRT’s interior with a fresh look. The aluminum trim gets one of two finishes, “Hectic Mesh” for the Challenger 392 SRT and “Dark Engine Turn” for the Challenger SRT Hellcat. The console also exudes craftsmanship and style with leather-wrapped surfaces and French-seamed accent stitching running from the back to the front. Employing a unique, elevated design, the all-new center console houses ergonomically located redundant button and knob controls for audio and climate functions. An all-new media hub with an SD card slot, USB outlet and audio jack is neatly housed inside the center console’s flocked armrest.

For those who opt for the segment-first TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, an all-new and class-exclusive electronic shifter with an all-new driver-oriented T-handle provides the driver with intuitive gear selection and offers an Auto Stick selector gate for added control. For those who prefer having a third pedal, the precise and track-proven Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission is fitted with a throwback ball shifter.

A redesigned SRT-branded heated steering wheel features a flat bottom for the high-performance driver. Available paddle shifters (with automatic transmission) are located on the back of the upper spokes. The buttons to control the driver-configurable full-color thin-film transistor (TFT) display are large and illuminated. Buttons for Uconnect and phone access now reside along the bottom edge of the horizontal spokes. Optional adaptive cruise control is configured by buttons that are symmetrically opposite on the right hand side of the wheel. As before, the highly praised audio controls are still found on the back of the upper spokes. This new tilt-telescoping steering wheel also has a 360-degree heat element.

Press Release - July 1st, 2014

The all-new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT, with its supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI® Hellcat engine, produces an unprecedented 707 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. of torque, making it the most powerful Challenger ever, Dodge’s most powerful V-8 ever and the most powerful muscle car ever.

The Challenger’s new 6.2-liter Supercharged Hellcat engine is also the first factory supercharged HEMI, as well as Dodge and SRT’s first application of V-8 supercharger technology. For the first time in Chrysler Group history, the all-new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT with a Hellcat engine comes standard with two key fobs — red and black. The red key fob is the only key that can unlock the full 707 horsepower and torque potential of the Challenger SRT Hellcat engine; while the black key fob limits the driver to a reduced engine output of 500 horsepower.

In addition to the awe-inspiring 707 horsepower of the new Hellcat HEMI, the new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat has been redesigned and totally re-engineered to be the most true-to-form muscle coupe on the market with performance-enhancing technologies inside and out, including the new TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-new interior inspired by the classic 1971 Challenger.

The Dodge and SRT brands now offer the most complete lineup of muscle cars in the market, including the new 2015 Dodge Challenger SXT with its standard powerful and fuel-efficient Pentastar V-6 engine combined with the TorqueFlite eight-speed transmission that delivers 300 horsepower and an estimated 30 miles per gallon; the 2015 Dodge Challenger R/T with the high-torque 5.7-liter HEMI now paired with the TorqueFlite eight-speed or six-speed manual transmission; and the all-new 6.4-liter HEMI Challenger Scat Pack that delivers 485 horsepower and 475 lb.-ft. of torque with the TorqueFlite eight-speed or six-speed manual.

The 2015 Dodge Challenger and Challenger SRTs are built at the Brampton, Ontario, Assembly Plant and will start arriving in Dodge dealerships in the third quarter of 2014.
